HBO took the wraps off plans for an upcoming miniseries chronicling the 2016 presidential election, to be based on an upcoming book by New York Times bestselling authors Mark Halperin and John Heilemann.

The pay cabler has reconvened some A-list talent behind the cameras, including Jay Roach, who will direct and executive produce, and Playtone’s Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, on board as executive producers.

The book will be the third installment in the “Game Change” series of campaign books by Halperin and Heilemann, which will be published by Penguin Press.

“Halperin and Heilemann’s book ‘Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime’ was widely hailed as the definitive account of the historic 2008 presidential election, and was followed four years later by the New York Times bestselling sequel ‘Double Down: Game Change 2012,'” HBO notes in its announcement.

Based on the first book, which was published in 2010, HBO Films’ “Game Change” debuted in 2012 and starred Julianne Moore, Woody Harrelson and Ed Harris. The program won five Emmys, including Outstanding Miniseries or Movie, along with three Golden Globes, including Best Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television, and a Peabody Award.

Said Len Amato, president, HBO Films: “We are thrilled to continue our relationship with Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, whose work on their bestselling book ‘Game Change’ set the bar for political reporting and storytelling inside a presidential campaign. Reuniting ‘Game Change’ director and executive producer Jay Roach and Playtone producers Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman with Mark and John for a project based on their upcoming book promises to vividly capture the most unique and impactful event in modern American politics.”

  1. With the self congratulating liberal press, awards organizations and media outlets producing and critiquing their own results, only the liberal spin is delivered! We have seen this every time someone like Oliver Stone or HBO is involved for example. But the uninformed masses eat this indigestible mix of innuendos and hypotheses as if it were fact. And if any “fact checking” is done, these people seek out the information on Twitter or Facebook! In the past I would be pleading for this to be written and produced as a documentary with real journalism standards applied. But we are at a point where journalism has died (or is near death) from partizan liberal bias. Will this flick be different? I seriously doubt it.

  2. One thing you can be sure of, this will win a lot of awards!
