Jeff Daniels, who starred for three seasons on the HBO drama series “The Newsroom,” is making his return to series television as the star of Hulu’s “The Looming Tower.”
Daniels will play John O’Neill, a bull-headed FBI veteran who heads the bureau’s New York counterterrorism unit.
Daniels won an Emmy in 2013 for his work as Will McAvoy on “The Newsroom” — one of three Emmy nominations he received for the role. He is also a four-time Golden Globe nominee — once for “The Newsroom” and three times for his performances in feature films, in “The Purple Rose of Cairo,” “Something Wild” and “The Squid and the Whale.”
“The Looming Tower” is Legendary Television’s adaptation of Lawrence Wright’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 9/11 expose. The 10-episode series comes from Academy Award-nominated writer Dan Futterman (“Foxcatcher,” “Capote”) and Academy Award- and Emmy Award-winning director Alex Gibney (“Going Clear: Scientology and The Prison of Belief,” “Taxi to the Dark Side” and “We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks”).
The series “traces the rising threat of Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda, and takes a controversial look at how the rivalry between the CIA and FBI may have inadvertently set the stage for the tragedy of 9/11 and the war in Iraq,” Hulu says in its announcement.
Futterman, Gibney and Wright will serve as executive producers.
