Late-Night Host Apologizes for Joke That Went Wrong

Mar 9, 2017  •  Post A Comment

The latest late-night host to do damage control over a joke that picked the wrong target is Samantha Bee of TBS’s “Full Frontal.” The New York Times reports that Bee apologized today for a joke that aired on Wednesday’s show mocking a writer for having what the show called “Nazi hair.”

The writer, Kyle Coddington, was diagnosed with brain cancer and has been undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

The piece was part of a segment featuring Michael Rubens, a correspondent for the show, attending last month’s Conservative Political Action Conference.

“Talking about how the conference had changed over time, a narrator for the segment said, ‘Just last year, CPAC was dominated by Ted Cruz supporters and chirpy little [expletive] with bow ties,'” The Times reports. “The narrator added: ‘This year, the bow ties were gone and replaced by Nazi hair. Nazi hair. Nazi hair.’ Each time the phrase was spoken, an image was shown of conference attendees with short haircuts.”

One of those images was of Coddington, who responded with tweets this morning in which he said: “Please delete this episode. I look like a balding potato.” He added: “Also, it’s not a Nazi haircut. Richard Spencer’s is, but mine’s from cancer.”

Bee sent out an apology today on her Twitter account, tweeting: “We deeply apologize for offending @_that_kyle in our CPAC segment. We only learned of his condition today & have removed him from the piece.”

  1. The joke wasn’t funny anyway. Why the obsession with nazis?

    • Because of the current administration’s tie-up with white nationalist ideas and rhetoric? Just guessing, but…

      • Typical, Nefnet. Go be an America hater someplace else.

        • Typical, Fletch…calling anyone who says something negative about the Trump administration an “America Hater”. I suppose you never said anything negative about the Obama administration?
