Report: Turmoil Behind the Scenes at ABC’s ‘Good Morning America’

Mar 29, 2017  •  Post A Comment

The natives are restless on ABC’s “GMA,” and at the center of it all is Michael Strahan, according to a report by The New York Post’s Page Six. The report quotes a source saying other “Good Morning America” talking heads are miffed about what they see as preferential treatment for Strahan by the network bosses.

“They roll out the carpet for [Strahan] while seasoned talent is treated like dirt. He’s been given a lot of opportunity, flexibility, when the others who have been working there longer don’t get that kind of treatment,” says a source quoted in the story.

Strahan is still the new kid in the lineup, having moved to “GMA” full time following an exit last spring from “Live with Kelly and Michael” that almost everyone agrees was poorly handled by the network. The longtime NFL pro spent almost four years co-hosting the chat show with Kelly Ripa.

“Strahan signed a special deal that allows him to continue to analyze football at ‘Fox NFL Sunday’ and host ABC’s ‘$100,000 Pyramid.’ But he was forced to drop most of his lucrative endorsement deals when he joined the morning show,” The Post reports.

The source is quoted in the Post story saying “GMA” pop anchor Lara Spencer “feels like her role has been minimized with Strahan. There’s not a lot of love between the two. They know how to put it on for the cameras, but he’s doing a lot of what Lara should be doing [on the show] and she’s not happy. She’s the pop person.”

The report also suggests that George Stephanopoulos appears to be losing interest in his “GMA” job, with the source saying: “He’s bored with the fluff. He goes into work, does the show and leaves by 8:57 a.m. He doesn’t interact. He’s been phoning it in for quite some time.”

The network’s version of the situation is quite different — click on the link above to The Post for quotes from an ABC News exec.

  1. More like “George” is ticked off he wasn’t allowed to do MORE for Hillary in her campaign and had in fact expected to get a cushy cabinet job so he could leave all this mundane morning show stuff behind. HAH !!
Tomorrow, when I arrive at the office, I’m marching right up to a fellow co-worker and demanding they BACK OFF! Because I’M the pop culture guy in our office! NOT HIM !!

  2. When George first joined Good Morning, it was much more of a news show and has become another morning show pushing recipes, fashion, entertainment, etc. I can understand why he is unhappy. ABC should work out a deal to give him a Sunday News Show and let him move on.

    • He does have a Sunday news show on ABC. It’s called “This week with George Stephanopoulos”

  3. “…what Lara should be doing.” How about doing what your employer tell you to do or quit.

  4. I quit watching Kelly when Michael joined the show then shortly after he joined GMA, I had enough and quit watching it. He is too much, to loud and too pushy. The show became everything about him. Every single piece, he has to make a comment, so I was out of there. They need to send him to The View, he would be a perfect fit. Maybe GMA could get back to the way it was before he arrived.

  5. Both Today and gma are awful…CBS is where we go…

  6. There should be mor respect for our talented sports figure who want to become TV journalists. MIchael seems to be hard working and is taking use of many of the allowances that have been given to talent in years past. He is a strong African American role model for future journalists and athletes. Enough- stop the HATE!! The other on air talent should be thankful they are making high salaries are are not back working for their local affiliate stations. – time to be grateful!!!

    • Thanks Mom!

  7. Mine is about today, March 29, 2018.
A bleached blond was arguing about hazing, Grace??, she is awful.
Let me know when she will be on again, so I can watch another network.
The pop stuff anybody can do.
Keep Michael, and add Cecelia Vega.
