Steven Spielberg has agreed to direct and Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks will star in “The Post,” a film about how The Washington Post brought the Pentagon Papers to light in 1971, Deadline.com reports.
The deals are still being negotiated, the publication notes. The movie is being co-financed by Fox and Amblin Entertainment, and is based on a spec script by Liz Hannah that was purchased last year by Amy Pascal’s Pascal Pictures.
“The idea is for Sully star Hanks to play [Post editor Ben] Bradlee, the editor who would figure in the movie classic ‘All The President’s Men,'” Deadline notes. “Streep, coming off an Oscar nom for ‘Florence Foster Jenkins,’ would play [publisher Kay Graham].”
