An NFL standout who has been the focus of relentless chatter on sports talk shows for the past several seasons appears to have finally had his fill of the league. Longtime Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is leaving football and moving into a broadcasting career with CBS, ESPN reports, citing league sources.

The Cowboys have filed paperwork with the league for his release, according to the report.

“Romo has reached a verbal agreement with CBS to be its No. 1 color commentator — replacing former NFL quarterback Phil Simms — alongside play-by-play veteran Jim Nantz, sources confirmed to ESPN. He also had drawn interest from Fox and NBC. The Sports Business Journal first reported Romo’s agreement with CBS,” ESPN reports.

The report adds: “Romo’s decision came down to his health, sources close to the situation told ESPN. Romo, who turns 37 on April 21, believes his family and his health are paramount at this time in his life. He was limited to playing in just parts of five games over the past two seasons because of collarbone and back injuries, and he suffered a compression fracture in his back last August that led the way to Dak Prescott’s emergence.”

  1. Replacing Simms? NFW.

  2. Yeah I agree. Simms is really solid.
