On-Again, Off-Again Speech by Ann Coulter Is On Again

A scheduled speaking engagement by conservative pundit Ann Coulter, which was originally supposed to take place next week at U.C. Berkeley before university officials pulled the plug on the appearance, is now on again.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the Coulter speech has now been scheduled for May 2 after the university reversed its decision to cancel it.

“Coulter’s speech on immigration will be held at an ‘appropriate, protectable venue,’ the university said. The university did not disclose the location of the speech. But the university said it had advised Coulter’s representatives and the Berkeley College Republicans, which organized the April 27 Coulter event, that the speaking engagement would take place next month,” The Times reports.

The decision came just one day after the school confirmed it had canceled the speech. The university cited safety concerns over possible confrontations between protesters on the left and the right.

In a statement today, Chancellor Nicholas Dirks said: “We have an unwavering commitment to providing for the safety and well-being of speakers who come to campus, our students and other members of our campus and surrounding communities. While there may, at times, be tension between these paired commitments, we cannot compromise either.”

“On Wednesday, UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof said campus police feared that some of the same extremist forces who caused problems during recent clashes would be out in force when Coulter was on campus,” The Times reports. “Coulter attacked Berkeley’s decision in a series of tweets, saying ‘no school accepting public funds can ban free speech.’”

  1. For now, free speech is still guaranteed in this country. Even such a horrible, horrible person like Coulter, who would gleefully deny that to others, has that right.

  2. Are you so naive that you actually believe free speech will happen during Coulters appearance? She will be shouted down and threatened by those of us opposed to her philosophies. We will “gleefully deny her that right”. Colleges used to be bastions of free speech. And if you espouse communistic or socialistic philosophies, our administrators will “gleefully” support us. Free speech is dead at colleges and you better get used to the idea.
