“American Idol” appears to be headed to a big 4 broadcast network with a target launch date of March 2018. TMZ.com reports that ABC is the front-runner for the new version of the singing competition, which previously had a 15-season run on Fox.

The report cites sources saying ABC plans to announce the show’s return at the upfronts in a couple of weeks.

“ABC tells us … there’s no signed deal, but our sources say the negotiations are far along and the fine points are being worked out right now,” TMZ reports. “We’re told both sides expect to seal the deal ‘soon.'”

NBC reportedly made an offer for the show several months ago, but has dropped out as a bidder. The report says Fox also made an attempt to land the show.

  1. I guess this probably helped get Ryan Seacrest to join the Live program.

  2. Didn’t care before. Don’t care now. Won’t care later, either.

  3. I wonder if this is part of ABC’s strategy to bring some life (and eyeballs) back to Sunday night programming? Would seem to be a good program to square off with NFL football.
