Scott Pelley Gets the Boot From ‘CBS Evening News’ — Network Names Interim Anchor

May 31, 2017  •  Post A Comment

Scott Pelley is out as the anchor of CBS’s flagship “Evening News,” with the network naming Anthony Mason as interim anchor, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

CBS has yet to make an official announcement, but Pelley’s exit has been widely reported in the media. THR cites sources at CBS saying Pelley will return to the program to bid farewell to viewers.

Officially, the program at this time is still called “CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley.”

Mason has been a top fill-in for Pelley on the program, and could wind up as Pelley’s replacement, THR notes. Pelley, who has been anchoring “Evening News” since 2011, is expected to remain with CBS as a correspondent for “60 Minutes.”

Pelley has been rumored to be on the chopping block for some time, as the CBS broadcast has remained in third place behind NBC and ABC. The New York Post’s Page Six broke the story of Pelley’s ouster Tuesday night.

“Sources tell us that ‘Poison Pelley’s’ office was being cleared out Tuesday while the anchor was away on an assignment for the network’s news magazine ’60 Minutes,'” The Post reported. “We’re told he’s being shifted permanently to ’60 Minutes.’”

The Post adds: “Sources say there was confusion Tuesday among staff at CBS’ Hell’s Kitchen headquarters as workers began dismantling the office of Pelley — dubbed ‘Poison Pelley’ by Page Six after he yelled at a reporter in 2013, ‘You wouldn’t last 10 seconds at CBS News!’”

The Post quotes a source saying: “[Pelley] was pushed out of the ‘Evening News.’ It’s been coming for a long time. This could have been handled better — [Pelley] is away on a story, and they’re cleaning out his office. It’s not the correct way to treat the face of CBS News.”

  1. Again you expect better from News productions. THEY are all a bunch of vipers vying for the top spot. That nice face belies the true nature of hatefulness.

  2. Are the poor ratings all to blame on the anchor? Maybe it’s just not produced well from story selection, presentation and lots of other variables. It takes a village to produce a network newscast. Sometimes the face of the cast isn’t always to blame

  3. I saw “Drama Series Canceled” under Scott Pelly’s photo. I thought they were referring to the CBS Evening News.

  4. Not. Fan of Pelley doing the news…he’s better on 60 min…I like Mason…I’ll give him a shot..

  5. He was unwatchable. You can feel the hate from his face. Like a male version of Rachael Maddow. No wait, that makes no sense.

  6. I was disgusted about what Scott Pelley said about the shooting at the baseball park. Mr. Pelley, who ended his six-year run as “CBS Evening News” anchor Friday night, declared during his closing monologue Thursday that now is the time to ask whether last week’s attack was “foreseeable, predictable and, to some degree, self-inflicted.” Good riddance! What a jerk. Your news division is biased and unprofessional! I am sure CBS will replace him with yet another hater that will spew more liberal dogma. Americas are on to you all. They are sick and tired of “news organizations”NOT doing the news but instead voicing their liberal viewpoint.
