Disneyland to Remove Part of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Ride That Has Drawn Criticism

Disneyland says it will pull the plug on a part of the popular “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride that has been a hot button for accusations of sexism. The Orange County Register reports that the theme park will remove a section of the ride in which women are auctioned off as brides.

A female character known as “The Redhead,” who is a star of the sequence, will be swapped out for a pirate who will help the auctioneer gather valuables from the townspeople, the paper reports.

The changes are due to be made next year to versions of the ride located at Disneyland, Walt Disney World and Disneyland Paris.

In a statement, Disneyland Resort spokeswoman Suzi Brown said: “We believe the time is right to turn the page to a new story in this scene, consistent with the humorous, adventurous spirit of the attraction.”

The move comes after Disneyland toned down part of the auction sequence a while back. “Years ago, the scene that comes after the auction scene, which used to have pirates chasing women, was changed to pirates chasing women for food, and one where a woman was chasing a pirate,” the paper notes.

  1. Disney is out of their collective corporate minds. Any criticism of the sort mention is ludicrous and doing this is nothing more than pandering to the collective insanity of the we’re-offended-by-anything-we-dislike, PC crowd.

  2. Oh my god. Give me a freaking break!! Dumbest thing ever! Do they wanna rewrite history too???
