Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, the couple who co-host the MSNBC program “Morning Joe,” responded to a Twitter attack by Donald Trump with an opinion piece in The Washington Post running today under the headline “Donald Trump is not well.”
The piece refers to Trump’s “unhealthy obsession with our show” and questions whether Trump is “mentally equipped to continue watching our show.”
“President Trump launched personal attacks against us Thursday, but our concerns about his unmoored behavior go far beyond the personal,” the hosts write. “America’s leaders and allies are asking themselves yet again whether this man is fit to be president.”
The piece comes one day after Trump lashed out at the cable hosts, focusing in particular on Brzezinski, as we reported Thursday. Among Trump’s attacks on “low I.Q. Crazy Mika,” as he calls her in a tweet, he references an incident in which he says “she was bleeding badly from a face-lift.”
In The Washington Post piece, Scarborough and Brzezinski write: “The president’s unhealthy obsession with our show has been in the public record for months, and we are seldom surprised by his posting nasty tweets about us. During the campaign, the Republican nominee called Mika ‘neurotic’ and promised to attack us personally after the campaign ended. This year, top White House staff members warned that the National Enquirer was planning to publish a negative article about us unless we begged the president to have the story spiked. We ignored their desperate pleas.”
Scarborough and Brzezinski also dispute the account of events in Trump’s Thursday morning tweets, including calling his face-lift comment a lie and detailing his “unrelenting assault on women.”
