Trump Breaks With a Tradition Started by Bill Clinton and Continued by Barack Obama

A tradition that began with Bill Clinton and continued with Barack Obama appears to have gone by the wayside with the Donald Trump presidency. TMZ.com reports that June 1 came and went without a declaration about LGBTQ Pride Month.

“It’s now June 2 … so it looks like President Trump is passing on the recent tradition of declaring June the month America celebrates Pride,” the story reports, noting that Clinton began the tradition with the declaration that June was LGBT Pride Month back on June 1, 1999.

The report notes that the tradition was quietly abandoned during the Bush administration, but returned on June 1, 2009, when Obama began making the annual proclamation.

June was reportedly chosen as LGBT Pride Month in commemoration of the Stonewall riots, which occurred in June 1969. The month has been marked by a number of LGBTQ Pride celebrations and events designed to fight discrimination against the LGBTQ community and acknowledge the contributions of LGBTQ people.

“June 1, 2017, was a telling day … would President Trump follow the lead of Obama and Clinton? The Prez said during the campaign he supported LBGTQ rights. But June 1st came and went, and so far … no declaration,” TMZ notes.

The White House reportedly did not respond to requests for comment on the story.
