Did a History Buff Just Shoot Down the New Amelia Earhart Theory?

Jul 11, 2017  •  Post A Comment

A new theory on the disappearance of Amelia Earhart that surfaced in connection with the History documentary “Amelia Earhart: The Lost Evidence” has run into some turbulence.

The documentary, built largely around a newly discovered photo thought to be from 1937, suggests that Earhart survived her final flight, being captured by the Japanese military after crash-landing in the Marshall Islands. But the AP reports that a blogger who focuses on Japanese military history has found the same photo in a book that was digitized in Japan’s National Diet Library.

The book has not been authenticated, but appears to have been published two years before Earhart’s disappearance.

In the documentary, the photo turns up mislabeled in the U.S. National Archives. The documentary suggests that the U.S. government may have covered up evidence about Earhart’s fate.

“The History channel is looking into the matter but stands behind its documentary,” the AP reports.

The History channel said in a statement today that it is “exploring the latest developments about Amelia Earhart and we will be transparent in our findings.”

  1. Another “Al Capone’s Vault.”

  2. And what a clever headline: Did the history buff “SHOOT DOWN” the Amelia Earhart story! I see what you guys at the Ass. Press just did. 🙂

  3. This does not surprise me. The theory that the Japanese captured and killed Earhart is an old one. It appears that those who advocate this latched unto something (the revelatory photo) and ran with it before establishing a proper provenance for it.

The most likely theory is the one that posits that Earhart’s plane crashed elsewhere. There is actual physical evidence… a piece of what is thought to be the “skin” of the plane. Even though there are no identifying markings to positively established it as coming from her plane, it matches in every other particular… including the rivet pattern.
