BBC America’s “Doctor Who” made an announcement Sunday that will be a game changer for the popular time travel series. For the first time in the long history of the show, the Doctor will be played by a female.

The show announced that Jodie Whittaker will be its thirteenth Time Lord. Whittaker will take over for Peter Capaldi, who will leave the show around Christmas.

Whittaker may be best known for her role as Beth Latimer on “Broadchurch.”
