A new series rolling out this weekend on HBO hit home for the filmmaker, who talked about the “agony and ecstasy” of putting together “The Defiant Ones” in an interview with TVWeek Open Mic writer Hillary Atkin.

Allen Hughes, director and executive producer of the four-part documentary series, discussed his close ties to the key players in the piece examining the cultural impact of Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. The doc includes interviews with some of the giants of the music industry — Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Bono, David Geffen, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Ice Cube and many others.

“The Defiant Ones” premieres Sunday, July 9, on HBO at 9 p.m. ET/PT and is scheduled to run on consecutive nights through July 12. In a first for HBO, all four episodes will be available for streaming July 9 on HBO NOW, HBO GO and affiliate portals and HBO On Demand.

Hughes, best known for his work with his brother Albert Hughes on features including “Menace II Society” and “Dead Presidents,” gives the story behind “The Defiant Ones” — please click here to read the interview.
