HBO Exec Maps Out Possible Future of an Expanded ‘Game of Thrones’ Franchise

HBO has plans for the “Game of Thrones” universe that go well beyond the end of the fantasy series, according to Programming President Casey Bloys, who confirmed that the pay-cable channel has four, and possibly five, “successor shows” in the works.

Bloys talked about plans for the franchise in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed. He appeared reluctant to call the new programs sequels or prequels, and even the seemingly generic term “spinoff” is being used only in small doses.

“I consider us incredibly fortunate to have a show that this many people have such interest in and that is such a good show,” Bloys told THR. “It would be insane for a network not to at least entertain the idea of a successor show — I was going to say ‘prequel’ but they’re not spinoffs because there are no existing characters going off the flagship.”

Bloys added that deals are in place for four “successor shows” with four writers, but word is that a fifth series may also be in the works. “Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin has reportedly been involved in all of the projects.

Bloys also touched on plans for the eighth and final season of “Game of Thrones.” The seven-episode seventh season premieres this Sunday, and is expected to be followed by a six-episode final season.

The time frame for season eight remains up in the air.

“I can’t really speculate on that,” Bloys said when asked whether viewers should expect the final season next year or in 2019. “All I will tell you is it is obviously a very ambitious season. This is the culmination of eight seasons of fantastic storytelling. They are writing, and they need to look at the production schedule, and we will take their lead in terms of the airdate that works best for them. … It shoots all over the world and takes a long time to figure out where, when and how to shoot. So they’re in the process of doing that, and they’ll let us know.”

Bloys did shoot down rumors that the season might get a theatrical release. “This is for subscribers,” he said.

  1. I find it hard to believe that GRRM could be involved. He can’t even finish the next book which should have been out 3 years ago!! How could he possibly find the time to be involved??? I love the show, and I’d probably be interested in another iteration, whether it be a prequel or a sequel. But I hope HBO doesn’t kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

  2. GRRM is too busy counting his money and working on the ” extensions ” to finish the current book.
