HBO appears to have found a follow-up to its megahit “Game of Thrones,” announcing today that it will begin production on “Confederate” following the final season of “Thrones.” The drama series, created, executive produced and written by “Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, will begin production following the final season of “Thrones.”

HBO Programming President Casey Bloys made the announcement.

“As the brilliant ‘Game of Thrones’ winds down to its final season, we are thrilled to be able to continue our relationship with Dan and David, knowing that any subject they take on will result in a unique and ambitious series,” Bloys said. “Their intelligent, wry and visually stunning approach to storytelling has a way of engaging an audience and taking them on an unforgettable journey. ‘Confederate’ promises to be no exception, and we are honored to be adding the talented team of Nichelle and Malcolm Spellman to the mix.”

Also in the mix as executive producers are Carolyn Strauss and Bernadette Caulfield.

“Confederate” takes place in an alternate timeline where the Southern states have seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution. The series tracks the activities of characters on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone, including freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists and the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate.

  1. The most important question is will there be dragons? LOL sounds interesting can’t wait for it.

  2. I have seen this basic plot line of alternative history – Man in the High Castle. This time it is Confederates rather than Nazi’s
