A new MTV show has been on the air for less than one day, and it’s already enmeshed in a nasty controversy that has included death threats. A red carpet premiere that had been scheduled for Monday was abruptly canceled after an uproar broke out on social media over the new reality show “Siesta Key.”

The New York Post’s Page Six reports that allegations of animal abuse surfaced as video of a shark being dragged to its death went viral.

The show, which is being positioned as MTV’s next “Laguna Beach,” tracks the lives of eight young people living in the Florida beach town of Siesta Key.

A group calling for a boycott of the show on Facebook has attracted more than 8,000 followers, The Post reports. The group wrote on Facebook: “Over the past few days, the connection between the production of the Siesta Key show and the horrific videos and photos of animal abuse have come to light.”

Alex Kompothecras, the so-called leader of the “Siesta Key” cast, denied involvement in the shark incident. But his father, Gary Kompothecras, “acknowledged that death threats against his son played a part in the premiere’s cancellation in an interview with the Tampa Bay Times,” The Post reports.

“Siesta Key” premiered Monday night.
