“The mandate from Jeff Bezos is clear: Bring me ‘Game of Thrones.’ That’s the word that has the creative community buzzing this week about a major strategy shift underway for Amazon Studios’ original series efforts,” write two of the best reporters on the entertainment beat, Cynthia Littleton and Daniel Holloway, in a major scoop for Variety.

The article continues, “Amazon’s decision this week to scrap plans for a second season of period drama “Z: The Beginning of Everything” reflects the new marching orders.”

The new strategy likely led to another cancellation: “Just a couple of weeks after Amazon debuted ‘The Last Tycoon’ the streaming service has abruptly canceled the F. Scott Fitzgerald drama,” Variety wrote in a separate story.

Wrote Littleton and Holloway in their piece, Bezos “is said to have tasked Amazon Studios chief Roy Price with honing the focus on high-end drama series with global appeal.”

  1. LOL it’s just this easy. Amazon has influenced popular culture in unprecedented ways. Now they just want to conjure lightning in a bottle.

  2. These new media companies are flightier than the old OTA networks, who couldn’t make up their minds and canceled highly rated shows (and new series) at the drop of a hat for the latest faddish thing that popped up.

Keep it up, Amazon. That business model worked so well for the old networks, I’m sure it’ll work out just as well for you too.

  3. The last must see show before GOT? Maybe The Sopranos? That started in 2000. GOT 2011. These are once a decade programs at best. Good Luck Amazon developing something for the 2020’s.
