Good News for Fans of ‘Freaky Friday’

For fans of “Freaky Friday” — the feature film staple and stage production, not the Wall Street triple witching hour — the franchise is headed to TV. Disney announced today that a musical adaptation is in the works at Disney Channel.

The original 1972 children’s book by Mary Rodgers has already spawned not only a stage production but also three feature films — a Jodie Foster/Barbara Harris version in 1976, a Gaby Hoffman/Shelley Long take in 1995 and a Lindsay Lohan/Jamie Lee Curtis variation in 2003.

Actresses Heidi Blickenstaff (“The Little Mermaid” and “Something Rotten!” on Broadway and the stage production of “Freaky Friday”) and Cozi Zuehlsdorff (“Dolphin Tale,” “Liv and Maddie”) will star in the TV production, which begins production this fall. The show will premiere in 2018 as part of the Disney Channel Original Movie franchise.
