Quarterback Cam Newton of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers is in hot water today after he made a comment during a press conference that is being widely criticized as sexist. You can see his remark in the video below, posted by CBS News.

Sports Illustrated reports that the yogurt company Dannon has severed ties with Newton over the incident.

The SI report quotes a statement from Dannon that says: “We are shocked and disheartened at the behavior and comments of Cam Newton towards Jourdan Rodrigue, which we perceive as sexist and disparaging to all women. It is entirely inconsistent with our commitment to fostering equality and inclusion in every workplace. It’s simply not ok to belittle anyone based on gender. We have shared our concerns with Cam and will no longer work with him.”

Meanwhile, social media was digging into the past history of Rodrigue, the Charlotte Observer reporter whose question about a wide receiver’s routes prompted Newton’s baffling response.

After a series of 2013 tweets from Rodrigue surfaced in which she used a racial epithet, Rodrigue expressed regret on social media, writing: “I apologize for the offensive tweets from my Twitter account from 4/5 years ago. There is no excuse for these tweets and the sentiment behind them. I am deeply sorry and apologize.”

  1. If any high profile person is interviewed by anyone, male or female, they might be smart to say, “No comment” about every question they are asked.
