Dove Apologizes After Ad Is Attacked as Racist

The Dove brand issued an apology after an ad for soap rubbed people the wrong way on social media, bringing a torrent of criticism about what many users considered the ad’s racist approach.

The ad for Dove body wash shows a black woman taking off her top, revealing a (clothed) white woman underneath. The image is followed by a similar revelation continuing the theme of varied ethnicities.

Dove posted a message Saturday saying: “An image we recently posted on Facebook missed the mark in representing women of color thoughtfully. We deeply regret the offense it caused.”

The ad can still be seen on various Facebook users’ accounts. As of midday today, it could be found by clicking here.

Meanwhile, the hashtag #BoycottDove was circulating this morning on Twitter.

In a statement provided to the media today, Dove said: “The short video was intended to convey that Dove body wash is for every woman and be a celebration of diversity, but we got it wrong.”

  1. No DOVE, you didn’t get it wrong. You just got punked by the “grievance industry.” Don’t you know you can’t be creative with a commercial anymore?? There’s racism EVERYWHERE if you look for it hard enough.

  2. How insensitive of DOVE! Making a commercial that tries to show several ethnicities equally! WOW! What are we coming to!()&#(&(^%)
