Trump Goes After NBC, Threatens TV Licenses

Oct 11, 2017  •  Post A Comment

Donald Trump went after a familiar target today in NBC and other media outlets, ramping up his attack with a threat against broadcast licenses.

The attack, laid out in a series of tweets, was prompted by a story reported by NBC News that said Trump told national security leaders last summer that he wanted an almost tenfold increase in the U.S. nuclear arsenal.

The NBC News story can be seen by clicking here.

Trump responded with a tweet this morning saying: “Fake @NBCNews made up a story that I wanted a ‘tenfold’ increase in our U.S. nuclear arsenal. Pure fiction, made up to demean. NBC = CNN!”

He followed up 10 minutes later with a tweet suggesting that the networks’ licenses should be challenged, which you can see below.

The threat to licenses drew a number of opposing responses, including a tweet from the Committee to Project Journalists, who wrote: “Trump’s assertion that @NBC’s license could be challenged emboldens other gov’ts to embrace authoritarian tendencies.”

  1. Networks do not have licenses that could be revoked by the president. That is typical Trump rhetoric to distract the press from other things he is doing, and keeping his name on the front page. If he was serious he would have followed Jemele Hill’s lead – recommend that advertisers boycott NBC.

  2. Actually (“Guilty Cleric”) NBC and all the other networks DO have licenses that could be revoked. Each network has a string of “O and O’s” – owned and operated stations that require FCC licenses to operate.

  3. “Bad for country”???? HE IS bad for this country and it won’t get better until he’s hauled off in a strait jacket. A bull-goose looney, as Hunter Thompson used to say….

  4. In other words, further follow the example of Hitler.

  5. Whether you agree with a politician ‘s politics or not, a comparison to one of the most evil people in the last 100 Years is inappropriate. There will be another election and maybe we can put forward a better candidate this time that will connect with middle Americans. The Dow being up 6000 points is not bad for the country.

  6. A broadcast license is renewable every 5 years. It is not something that is given forever. The First Amendment does not give any journalist, be they liberal or conservative, the right to knowingly publish untruthful news. If you (or Trump) feels that a station’s license should be challenged, there is a legal way to challenge. Twitter is neither the time nor the place to try to change laws.

  7. Can we pull Trump’s license to be an American citizen … this “Dictator in Training” would do so much better if he did a hostile takeover of a country like Venezuela where he can install himself as their fearless leader and monarch … Viva Trump !

  8. Trump is a wannabe dictator. Trying to remove “non-government-approved” press is one of the oldest tricks by authoritarian rulers. Read up on your history and make sure that it doesn’t happen here.
