Black Friday Declared Dead — Replaced by Something Bigger

Shoppers who battled Black Friday crowds a few days ago may not have realized that they were participating in a tradition that has been declared dead.

Business Insider reports that at least one analyst says Black Friday has been replaced by Black November.

“The idea of Black Friday as a one-day shopping event finally died this year,” the story reports. “Its death comes amid the rise of mobile shopping and a decline in the number of unique discounts.”

The report adds: “As Black Friday fades in importance, analysts and consumers are realizing they need a new name for the steep discounts shoppers enjoy ahead of the holiday season.”

The “ominous-sounding winner,” Business Insider reports, is “Black November,” which comes from Marshal Cohen, the head retail analyst at NPD Group.

“As retailers increasingly spread sales and discounts throughout the month, November has become a shopping extravaganza,” the story reports. “Online sales from November 1 through 22 totaled almost $30.4 billion this year, accounting for nearly 18% year-over-year growth, according to Adobe Analytics. In fact, every day in November so far has seen over $1 billion in online sales, creating a new paradigm for shoppers and retailers.”

While Black Friday is still one of the biggest shopping days of the year, it now has some competition from Thanksgiving, Cyber Monday and the two weekend days in between.

“Thanksgiving is now the third-biggest shopping day of the year, behind Black Friday and Cyber Monday, according to Salesforce,” Business Insider reports.
