The J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy series “The Lord of the Rings” is headed to television with a multiseason production commitment from Amazon.

The adaptation will explore new storylines preceding Tolkien’s “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the company said. The project will roll out exclusively on Prime Video.

The project will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and Warner Bros. Entertainment’s New Line Cinema.
