Alt-Right Artist Says Trump Was the Inspiration for Attack on Meryl Streep

A right-wing artist is claiming credit for the “She Knew” posters targeting Meryl Streep and attacking her stance on the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault scandal. People reports that Sabo, a 49-year-old former U.S. Marine, and two collaborators are responsible for the posters.

The U.K. publication The Guardian quotes Sabo, who’s described as an alt-right artist, saying: “She’s swiping at us so we’re swiping back.” The campaign is apparently in retaliation for Streep’s use of her latest film, “The Post,” to bash Donald Trump.

The Guardian adds: “Sabo said he did not know if Streep had in fact enabled Weinstein’s alleged decades of abuse.

“I wasn’t sitting in a room with her,” Sabo is quoted saying in The Guardian. “I can’t say 100%. But I’d say anyone in the [film] industry had a pretty good idea. I think she knew. Maybe she was providing Weinstein with the fresh meat.”

“The poster campaign caps a torrid week for Streep, who was already on the defensive after fellow actor Rose McGowan, who says she was raped by Weinstein, accused the grand dame of Hollywood of silence and hypocrisy,” The Guardian adds. “McGowan made the accusation in a now deleted tweet, which was prompted by reports that women will wear black at next month’s Golden Globes awards show in solidarity with victims of sexual misconduct.”

In a statement released by Streep soon after the Weinstein scandal erupted in October, Streep said: “The disgraceful news about Harvey Weinstein has appalled those of us whose work he championed, and those whose good and worthy causes he supported. The intrepid women who raised their voices to expose this abuse are our heroes.”

Streep added: “One thing can be clarified. Not everybody knew. Harvey supported the work fiercely, was exasperating but respectful with me in our working relationship, and with many others with whom he worked professionally.

“I didn’t know about these other offenses: I did not know about his financial settlements with actresses and colleagues; I did not know about his having meetings in his hotel room, his bathroom, or other inappropriate, coercive acts. And If everybody knew, I don’t believe that all the investigative reporters in the entertainment and the hard news media would have neglected for decades to write about it.”
