Singer Elton John, who has been the focus of legendary tours since the early ’70s, announced that he is retiring from the road.

John said he plans to go out “with a bang,” with a three-year global tour to be his farewell to the road.

The AP quotes the singer saying: “I’ve had a good run, I think you’d admit that.”

“The 70-year-old singer, pianist and composer said he wanted to spend time with his family,” the AP reports. “His children will be 10 and 8 when he stops and he hoped he might be able to take them to soccer practice.”

Said John: “My priorities now are my children and my husband and my family. This is the end.”

John is scheduled to receive the President’s Merit Award at Sunday’s Grammy Awards, where he will perform alongside Miley Cyrus.
