Grammy Ratings Sink to All-Time Low

Viewer numbers for Sunday’s 60th annual Grammy Awards were down significantly from the year-ago totals, with Variety reporting that the broadcast was running 12% below last year’s ceremony in the latest available figures for the key demo of viewers 18-49 — and down 24% in total viewers.

Based on time zone-adjusted numbers, the publication reports that Sunday’s three-and-a-half-hour show, televised by CBS, was pulling a 6.9 average rating in 18-49, along with 19.8 million viewers. Those numbers compare with a 7.8 average rating and 26.1 million viewers for the 2017 ceremony. This year’s demo number is the lowest in the show’s history, according to Variety.

“The show in Nielsen’s overnight metered markets averaged 12.7 household rating and 21 share in the 56 overnight metered markets, which cover about 70% of U.S. TV households,” Variety notes. “That’s down from a 16 household rating for the 2017 telecast.”

Even so, CBS dominated the night as most of the broadcast competition opted not to put up original programming against the Grammys — and the ceremony will still rank as one of television’s most-watched events of 2018.

CBS noted that Sunday’s Grammys ceremony ranks as the most-watched prime-time entertainment program on any network since the Feb. 26, 2017, Oscars telecast, based on Nielsen time zone-adjusted fast national ratings.

“For the night, CBS dominated the combined broadcast competition in viewers by +134% (versus 8.55m), +142% in adults 25-54 (versus 2.6), +184% in adults 18-49 (versus 1.9) and +258% in adults 18-34 (versus 1.2),” the network noted.

  1. Yeah no interest. Dunno any of the artists

  2. yay, keep up all the politcal b/s and sink even lower! not to mention no one seems to be able to write a song without an obscenity in it.

  3. Would never watch any of so called elites they have no idea how real people live. Only reason anyone watched was to see what they were wearing. They should not be allowed to talk politics. Everyone has an opinion not just theirs. Maybe they should check with their investors and see how many more crumbs are in their bank accounts.

  4. No desire to see a bunch of spoiled rich people patting themselves on the back while lecturing me on how I should live my life. Keep your opinions on politics to yourself. (plus, there are so many awards shows now, pretty much everyone gets a trophy.)
