A popular actress added her voice to the issue of sexual harassment in Hollywood, but Academy Award nominee Catherine Deneuve is positioning herself against the #MeToo movement.
Reuters reports that Deneuve, known for her roles in films by legendary directors such as Luis Bunuel, Francois Truffaut and Roman Polanski, joined 99 other French women in signing a column denouncing the wave of accusations against men in Hollywood in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal.
The column, published by the French daily Le Monde, blasts the wave of harassment allegations as “puritanism,” saying the movement is fueled by a “hatred of men,” Reuters notes.
The U.K. publication The Guardian reports that the column claims the “witch-hunt” that followed Weinstein’s downfall threatens sexual freedom, declaring that men should be “free to hit on” women.
“This urge to send men to the slaughterhouse, instead of helping women be more autonomous, helps the enemies of sexual freedom,” the column declares, according to Reuters.
Deneuve, 74, one of France’s most famous movie stars, was nominated for an Oscar in 1993 for “Indochine.”
Wow! She sure states some points that are not agreed with by most of this “movement” right now. Is it not amazing how a mature woman, born of an earlier generation is speaking out against this “feminist” movement?
I’ve said this all along. People from a different generation applying this Generations ideas to an older generation. Not good in any sense. Like the old saying, “you had to be there”.
I am sorry, but neither my parents their parents or my children endorse rape or blackmailing a woman into sex with an offer of a job or threat of firing. No matter what generation you are in that is objectionable conduct and to imply it is endorsed by previous generations is insulting to everyone. One old lady in France making a ridiculous statement does not mean other generations endorse or approve of such conduct.
