After a supermarket chain slashed the price of the hazelnut and chocolate spread Nutella by 70%, rioting reportedly spread across France.
“Chaotic scenes were reported at branches of Intermarche as customers fought to take advantage of the offer,” CNN reports. “Videos posted online showed the lengths to which people were prepared to go in order to get their hands on the spread.”
Intermarche reportedly cut the price of a jar of Nutella from the usual price of about $5.60 down to about $1.75. The store chain apologized for the incident, saying it had been “surprised” by the level of demand.
“People just rushed in, shoving everyone, breaking things. It was like an orgy,” a store employee in Forbach, in northeast France, is quoted saying. “We were on the verge of calling the police.”
Police did respond to a store in Otstricourt after disturbances broke out, the report notes.
