An actor known for roles on the TV series “Justified” and “Home Improvement,” who also played drums behind Bob Dylan, Kenny Rogers and Johnny Rivers, has died. Deadline reports that Mickey Jones died today following a lengthy illness. He was 76.
Jones was an accomplished drummer before turning his attention to acting after the breakup of Kenny Rogers’ band the First Edition in 1976. Among his career highlights as a musician was replacing Levon Helm as a member of what would later become the Band, playing behind Dylan during the singer’s legendary 1966 tour of Australia and Europe.
Jones had a prolific career on TV and in feature films, including appearances on the big screen in “Sling Blade” and “Tin Cup.” On television his many roles included playing Peter Bilker on “Home Improvement,” Rodney “Hot Rod” Dunham on “Justified” and Chester on the “Alice” spinoff “Flo.”
