Actor John Mahoney, best known for playing the perennially annoyed ex-cop father of Frasier and Niles Crane on NBC’s hit sitcom “Frasier,” has died.

TMZ reports that Mahoney died Sunday in hospice care in Chicago. He was 77.

Mahoney received two Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor, in 1999 and 2003, for his work as Martin Crane in the long-running comedy series. The show also earned him Golden Globe nominations in 1994 and 2001. He shared in 10 Screen Actors Guild Award nominations — every year from 1995-2004 — for “Frasier” for its ensemble cast, including a win in 2000.

Mahoney kept busy after “Frasier” wrapped in 2004, including a run on HBO’s “In Treatment” in 2009, a series of appearances on “Hot in Cleveland” and a guest spot on “Foyle’s War” in 2015 — his most recent credit.

Born in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, Mahoney was active on the stage, winning a Tony for Best Featured Actor in a Play for “The House of Blue Leaves.” He also appeared in feature films, including “The American President,” “Barton Fink,” “Say Anything…” and “Eight Men Out.”
