Taco Bell eclipsed Burger King in U.S. sales last year to become the fourth-largest domestic restaurant brand, Bloomberg reports, citing a preliminary report by research firm Technomic.
The top three remained unchanged. McDonald’s Corp. holds down the No. 1 spot — by a lot — followed by Starbucks Corp. at No. 2 and Subway Restaurants in third place.
“Taco Bell’s systemwide sales — the total sales of restaurants that carry the brand — jumped 5 percent in the U.S. to about $9.8 billion in 2017,” Bloomberg reports. “The company, owned by Yum! Brands Inc., has made inroads with indulgent fare, along with $1 items that appeal to budget-strapped millennials.”
The Technomic report will be finalized in March, but the preliminary data shows McDonald’s at close to $38 billion in sales, Starbucks with about $18 billion, Subway at around $11 billion, Taco Bell’s $9.8 billion and Burger King just behind at about $9 billion.
