‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Shocker: Two Fan Favorites Leaving the Show

Two longtime cast members on the hit ABC drama series “Grey’s Anatomy” are leaving the show. Deadline reports that Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew will exit at the end of the show’s current 14th season.

“Capshaw has been on the show for 10 seasons, nine of them as a series regular, playing Dr. Arizona Robbins; Drew has been on ‘Grey’s’ for nine seasons, eight of them as a series regular, playing Dr. April Kepner,” Deadline notes, adding: “The decision was made by the producers, who at the start of each season have to formally pick up the option of each regular cast member. Sources say Capshaw and Drew will be the only series regular members of ‘Grey’s’ large ensemble cast to depart this year.”

The show has not officially been picked up for season 15, but Deadline calls a renewal “a foregone conclusion,” with the show’s ratings remaining strong and star Ellen Pompeo having recently signed a two-year deal bumping up her salary to the neighborhood of $20 million a year.

“Sources close to the matter stress that the decision for Capshaw and Drew’s exits was based strictly on the show’s creative direction,” Deadline reports, noting that the decision prompted speculation online about a possible connection between the departures of the characters and salary issues.
