A drama series that has been one of the signature shows for its channel during its seven-season run is getting a spinoff series. USA Network announced today that it picked up a “Suits” spinoff to be led by Gina Torres.

The series comes from Universal Cable Productions and is executive produced and written by “Suits” creator and executive producer Aaron Korsh along with executive producer and showrunner Daniel Arkin. Doug Liman, David Bartis and Gene Klein of Hypnotic, and Torres, will also serve as executive producers.

The new series, whose title has not been announced, centers on Torres’ powerhouse lawyer Jessica Pearson as she adjusts to the dirty world of Chicago politics.

“Gina’s portrayal of Jessica Pearson as one of television’s strongest, most successful businesswomen has made a huge impact with fans,” said Chris McCumber, President, Entertainment Networks, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment.  “We can’t wait to explore this next chapter in the ‘Suits’ legacy — and a brand new world for Jessica.”

The mothership, “Suits,” has been renewed for an eighth season, but without series mainstays Torres, Meghan Markle and Patrick J. Adams. Katherine Heigl will try to fill the void as a main character starting in season eight.

Jessica’s situation in the Windy City will be introduced during the “Suits” season seven finale, airing Wednesday, April 25.
