Despite ratings results that have generally been low by “American Idol” standards, ABC has picked up the singing competition for a second season on the network.

Deadline reports that host Ryan Seacrest and judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie are all lined up to return.

“‘American Idol’ has not been a runaway ratings hit in its return,” the report notes. “The ABC incarnation posted a series of ratings declines and hit multiple franchise all-time lows before recently rebounding with the start of the live shows. It also was regularly topped by NBC’s ‘The Voice’ on Monday.”

But the report adds: “Still, ‘American Idol’ is on track to finish as Sunday’s No. 1 entertainment broadcast series on each of its 8 telecasts this season in Live + Same Day Adults 18-49. On average, the series ranks No. 1 in its 2-hour slot with Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34, across all key Women and Teens 12-17.”

  1. So, when the show known for audience voting spends 2/3 of the season not letting them vote, you lose your audience? Big surprise. Hope they learn their lesson for next season.
