ABC Reportedly Developing Sitcom Spinoff

A new series is said to be in development at ABC that would be a spinoff from the network’s popular show “The Middle.” Variety reports that the new series “would center around socially awkward Heck daughter Sue, played by Eden Sher.”

“A spinoff of ‘The Middle’ could help fill the hole in the fall schedule left by the cancellation of ‘Roseanne,'” Variety notes. “Both ‘Roseanne’ and ‘The Middle’ centered on Midwestern families trying to make ends meet. ABC was hoping to use ‘Roseanne’ to launch the new fall family comedy ‘The Kids Are Alright,’ as well as anchor its entire Tuesday night lineup. While ‘The Middle’ never approached ‘Roseanne’ numbers in the ratings, the show remained a stable performer for ABC throughout its run.”

News of the possible spinoff comes a little more than a week after “The Middle” wrapped its nine-season run, although the project has been rumored for a while now.

ABC already has one comedy spinoff in the works for 2018-2019, the report notes. That would be “Schooled,” a spinoff of “The Goldbergs” that will star Tim Meadows and is due at midseason.
