Could ‘Cheers’ Come Back 25 Years Later? Here’s What Some of the Key Players Are Saying

May 18, 2018  •  Post A Comment

Two of the co-creators of “Cheers” and one of the long-running NBC hit’s stars got serious about the possibility of a reboot of the seminal sitcom in a report by Variety on the 25th anniversary of the show’s finale.

The publication discussed the finale, the show’s legacy and the chance for “another round” with a number of the key players, inclucing co-creators James Burrows and Glen Charles along with actress Shelley Long — who is enthusiastically in favor of bringing the show back.

“I’ve pitched a reboot ‘til I’m blue in the face,” Long told Variety. “I’d love to do it. I’m not even trying to be cool about it. The cool thing to do is to go, ‘Oh, well, you know, we had our time…’ But I do a three-minute commentary on KCRW here in L.A., and I pitched my ‘Cheers’ reboot idea on the radio, hoping that someone would hear it! I’d love to sit in a room with the funniest people I know, like I did 25 years ago, and with incredibly gifted performers onstage. I’d be happy to do that for the next 25 years!”

But Burrows and Charles appeared to hit the brakes. Said Charles: “’Will & Grace’ and ‘Roseanne’ — those people don’t seem to have aged significantly. Our people, I know, have. So it just wouldn’t be the same. And I’m not quite sure what that story would be. An aging bartender chasing women would be very strange. It wouldn’t feel right.”

Added Burrows: “There’s this whole thing about meeting your first girlfriend 30 or 40 years later. You might be inquisitive and interested, but you’ll always have in your head what she looked like when she was 18 years old, and you kind of want to preserve that. Some people don’t care. But we want to preserve what we have.”

  1. Stop with the f-ing remakes already!! Sheesh

  2. Stop with the fucking remakes ….

  3. No! Stop with The fucking remakes! Sheesh

  4. Well of course Shelley Long is enthusiastic about a reboot. She “enthusiastically” left “Cheers” for a bigger and better career in the movies and promptly fell off the face of the Earth.

  5. What the hell is wrong with a reboot of the show with original cast? Nothing in my opinion.

  6. They should do it with an all new cast, let the bar be where the focus lays.

  7. Please bring the show Cheers back but with the same cast members, I loved the show

  8. Cheers was my generation…loved it.
Present generation I find like it as well and want more. This is not a fluke or minority.
Original cast to get it going and slide in new actors to continue a successful role.
The reason is was successful (outside the great actors) was it touched a real life application that is still occurring. People leave work, going to a home like atmosphere with friends. CHEERS WITH S DRINK! Comedy with reality mixed drawing a few generations together that works simplicitically.
KISS…..Keep it simple stupid! That always works. Thus, Cheers will works.
I’m s simple man working and surrounded by all cultures and diverse people. Everyone misses “Cheers”.
Try it…..its only money. Soon, these great actors wont be around anymore and the opportunity will be gone.
    That would be sad.
Humble man with a humble opinion that seldom gets shared.
    Hope someone listens.

  9. I could see it working, but with a new cast. Members of the old cast could make occasional cameos. LOL, maybe have an episode where John Taffer makes an appearance 🙂
