Disney Channel Updates One of the Classic Body-Swap Movies

Disney Channel hopes to introduce the tried-and-true movie concept of the body swap to a new generation when it televises an updated version of “Freaky Friday.” The telecast of the new music-driven TV version is set for Friday, Aug. 10.

The project stars Cozi Zuehlsdorff and Heidi Blickenstaff in the story of a mother and daughter who spend a day in each other’s shoes. The movie is written by Bridget Carpenter, with music by Tom Kitt and lyrics by Brian Yorkey. It’s directed by Steve Carr and choreographed by John Carrafa.

The “Freaky Friday” franchise has been updated a few times, including in 2003 with a feature version starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, following the 1976 original with Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster. A TV movie version aired on ABC in 1995 starring Shelley Long and Gaby Hoffmann.

  1. The 2003 Freaky Friday was not “the original”, it was a remake of the 1976 film starring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster.
