Politician Under Fire Over TV Appearance — Here’s What Got Him in Hot Water

A longtime politician who bared his buttocks and repeatedly shouted a racial slur during a television taping is under pressure after Sunday’s telecast of his appearance drew widespread criticism.

USA Today reports that the incident involving Jason Spencer, a Republican state lawmaker from Georgia, is the latest in a series of problems encountered by politicians who have taken part in Sacha Baron Cohen’s Showtime program “Who Is America?”

In a clip posted by Showtime, which you can watch below, Spencer can be seen shouting the n-word and dropping his pants during a session presented by Cohen as anti-terrorism training.

USA Today reports that Cohen, in character as Israeli anti-terrorism expert Col. Erran Morad, “convinces Spencer that he’s acting in a training video, similar to how he persuaded former and current congressmen to record public-service announcements for the fake ‘Kinderguardians’ program in the ‘Who is America?’ debut episode.”

The report adds: “The segment escalates further when Cohen claims that acting ‘homo’ will ward off terrorists, inspiring Spencer to pull down his pants and run backward towards Cohen, screaming, ‘America!'”

Spencer, who lost a primary election in May, is closing out his fourth term in the Georgia state legislature, the report notes. He was doing spin control last week ahead of the telecast.

“The 43-year-old physician assistant told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the show ‘took advantage of my fears that I would be attacked by someone’ and ‘exploited my state of mind for profit and notoriety,’ and that ‘this media company’s deceptive and fraudulent behavior is exactly why President Donald Trump was elected,'” USA Today reports.

Spencer has been condemned for the appearance by his GOP colleagues, according to media reports, with Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal calling his actions and language “appalling and offensive.”

Georgia House Speaker David Ralston said in a statement: “The actions and language used on this video are reprehensible. Representative Spencer has disgraced himself and should resign immediately. Georgia is better than this.”
