Oscar winner Ron Howard will produce and direct the pilot for the new TV project “68 Whiskey” (working title), a dark comedy about a team of Army medics deployed to a forward operating base in Afghanistan.

Paramount Network announced plans today for the project from Imagine Television Studios, CBS Television Studios, Roberto Benabib and yes Studios.

The project is adapted from the Israeli series “Charlie Golf One.”

Howard is set to direct and serve as an executive producer along with Oscar winner Brian Grazer, Imagine Television Group Chairman Francie Calfo (“Empire,” “Genius”) and Emmy-nominated Roberto Benabib (“Weeds,” “The Brink,” “Ally McBeal”), who is also set to write, Paramount Network said. Zion Rubin, the creator of the Israeli production, will also executive produce along with Efrat Shmaya Dror from the United Studios of Israel and Danna Stern from yes Studios.

The project “follows a multicultural mix of men and women deployed as Army medics to a forward operating base in Afghanistan nicknamed ‘The Orphanage,'” Paramount said. “Together, they endure a dangerous and Kafkaesque world that leads to self-destructive appetites, outrageous behavior, intense camaraderie and occasionally, a profound sense of purpose.”

The project was developed as part of the programming partnership between Imagine Television Studios and CBS.

“Charlie Golf One” is produced by United Studios of Israel and yes TV, the production company behind the Netflix hit format “Fauda.”

The news comes as the new Paramount Network begins to roll out its inaugural slate of original series, including “Yellowstone,” “American Woman” and “Waco.”
