Scarlett Johansson Getting Backlash Over Casting — Again

Actress Scarlett Johansson is at the center of another controversy over her casting, this time because she will be playing a trans man.

Johansson is set to play Dante “Tex” Gill in the upcoming “Rub & Tug.” The movie reunites her with director Rupert Sanders, who also helmed “Ghost in the Shell” — the previous movie to embroil Johansson in controversy.

“Ghost in the Shell” was accused of whitewashing for casting Johansson as an Asian character, Major Motoko Kusanagi.

The New York Post’s Page Six quotes a tweet from April Reign, who is known for the #OscarsSoWhite campaign, commenting on the latest casting. Reign tweeted: “Scarlett Johansson received considerable backlash for Ghost in the Shell, when she played a whitewashed Asian character. The movie tanked. Undeterred, she has teamed up WITH THE SAME DIRECTOR to play a trans male character in ‘Rub & Tug.’”

Johansson responded in a statement released to the website Bustle through a rep, saying of her critics: “Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment.”
