About 350 Media Outlets Are Writing Today Why It’s Dangerous for Trump to Repeatedly Say Journalists Are the Enemy of the People — Here’s Where You Can Find Links to About 100 of These Editorials

About 350 newspapers and other media outlets across the U.S. are running editorials today decrying Donald Trump’s characterization of the media as the “enemy of the people.”

CNN published a list of links to many of the editorials, which you can find by clicking here.

The Boston Globe took the lead in organizing the event, writing today: “A central pillar of President Trump’s politics is a sustained assault on the free press. Journalists are not classified as fellow Americans, but rather ‘The enemy of the people.’ This relentless assault on the free press has dangerous consequences. We asked editorial boards from around the country — liberal and conservative, large and small — to join us today to address this fundamental threat in their own words.”

The Society of Professional Journalists, referring to Trump, wrote: “His threats on freedom of the press began a month after taking office. His belittling of journalists continues today. He has called CNN ‘the worst.’ He has humiliated journalist Jim Acosta for his reporting. He has banned a network pool reporter from a Rose Garden event because he did not like her questions. On Monday, the outgoing United Nations human rights commissioner said Trump’s anti-press rhetoric is ‘very close to incitement of violence.’”

The SPJ piece adds: “A free press is essential to a healthy democracy. Those in power who attempt to stifle the press from reporting on certain events simply because the reporting is not always positive can be viewed as authoritarian. Our Founding Fathers gave the press the right to report on events, to report on government officials and to uncover wrongdoing. Those who abuse their power in an attempt to reduce the legitimacy of the press most certainly have something to hide.”

Trump responded to the event by lashing out yet again at the media, as we reported separately.

  1. TRUMP IS THE WORST THING TO HAPPEN TO THE US SINCE 9.11 … THIS DOMESTIC TERRORIST NEEDS TO BE FIRED AND SENT TO PRISON …

    • But that would leave us with “P”. Who will be far worse. Lots of people mistakenly compare “T” to Hitler, but that’s a mistake. In the current political hegemony, “T” is actually Paul von Hindenburg.

  2. The mainstream media are scum. Garbage people.

  3. Poor Fo, Poor, Poor John. That the two of you would have to live under SUCH oppression. Tsk, Tsk, Tsk.
Do you think the public distrusts the media because of TRUMP? If so, you’re clueless. Trust in the mainstream media has been deteriorating for years! When the economy is doing better than it has in 10 years. When unemployment is lower than it’s been in ages (and Black and Hispanic unemployment at all time lows). When each day brings new revelations of the Clinton campaign and the DNC’s collusion with foreign actors and when over 90% of the coverage of President trump is negative, there’s a good reason over 70% of the population thinks the news coverage of the mainstream media is BIASED. John, if you really knew ANYTHING about history you wouldn’t even dream of comparing a U.S. President to the NAZI party. That you do is a joke and shows the Kool Aid mustache you walk around with just might be permanent.
