The creator of ABC’s “black-ish” is distancing himself from the network, signing an exclusive multiyear production agreement with Netflix.
The AP reports that the streamer’s deal with Kenya Barris, who also produced the “black-ish” spinoff “grown-ish” for ABC’s corporate sibling Freeform, “makes Barris the latest prominent TV creator to jump from broadcast and cable to the streaming platform.”
The report notes that Barris “ended his ABC Studios contract early after ABC declined to air a ‘black-ish’ episode that reportedly addressed issues including the NFL player protests.”
The report adds: “Among other producers who have made Netflix deals: Shonda Rhimes, creator of ABC hits ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Scandal,’ and Ryan Murphy of FX series including ‘American Horror Story.’”
