Kanye West Apologizes for Slavery Comments

Kanye West has apologized after being embroiled in controversy for months over comments he made earlier this summer about slavery.

CNN quotes West saying in an interview today with WGCI-FM in Chicago: “I don’t know if I properly apologized for how that slave comment made people feel. So I want to take this moment right now to say … I’m sorry for people who felt let down by that moment.”

In an interview with TMZ back in May, West said: “When you hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years?! That sounds like a choice.”

He added: “You were there for 400 years and it’s all of y’all. It’s like we’re mentally imprisoned.”

CNN notes that one TMZ staffer, Van Lathan, challenged West’s comments at the time, telling him: “Frankly, I’m disappointed, I’m appalled, and brother, I am unbelievably hurt by the fact that you have morphed into something to me, that’s not real.”

In the radio interview West reportedly said the incident “showed me how much black people love me and how much black people count on me and depend on me and I appreciate that.”

  1. We don’t have to love you to hate the shit that comes out of your mouth. Your position in the mainstream media is the only that made it important; not you, as a person. Get your ego on check

  2. No one felt “let down” by Kanye West’s comments, because all it did was confirm what we already knew about him, which is that he’s a self-important jerk. We can only be let down by someone if we expect them to behave decently in the first place.

  3. His comment about 400 years is miniscule. Human slavery has been going on as long as recorded history. And it didn’t matter the color of your skin, just that you were in the wrong place, at the wrong time, with an unfortunate set of circumstances. Chinese, Egyptians, Romans, and many more. They all had slaves. Even in Africa! But it seems no one wants to talk about real history, just the immediate topic on so many tongues and statements seem to be blurred beyond vision.
