Barack and Michelle Obama have brought a veteran entertainment executive into the fold as they set up their production company at Netflix.
“Priya Swaminathan, a seasoned entertainment executive with a background in documentaries and social activism, has been hired to work at the Los Angeles-based production company of the former president and first lady, according to sources,” The Hollywood Reporter’s Live Feed reports. “She will team with the Obamas on developing new Hollywood projects via their previously announced Netflix deal.”
Swaminathan, a filmmaker, activist and the former director of development at Annapurna Pictures, has been involved recently in the Time’s Up initiative against sexual harassment and is active in Democratic politics. THR notes that she produced and co-directed “Very Young Girls,” a 2007 documentary on New York’s teenage prostitutes that ran on Showtime.
The Obamas have a multi-year deal with Netflix to produce films and TV series.
