NBC’s “Today” show has named one of the network’s rising stars on the news side as the news anchor for the show’s weekday editions. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Craig Melvin will take on the job full time.

Melvin recently left his spot as co-host of the show’s Saturday morning edition.

“On Tuesday morning, co-host Savannah Guthrie said that Melvin stepped away from the Saturday show ‘so he can be with us every morning, and we’re so happy,'” THR reports.

Melvin is quoted saying of Guthrie and co-host Hoda Kotb: “I didn’t have sisters growing up, so I’m looking forward to picking up two sisters every Monday through Friday,” prompting Guthrie to quip: “The sisters you never wanted.”

THR notes that Melvin will continue to host the afternoon show “MSNBC Live with Craig Melvin.”

“Before taking on his new role, Melvin served as a national correspondent for the ‘Today’ show,” THR reports, adding: “Melvin made national headlines in June during an interview with former President Bill Clinton, who chafed at Melvin’s questions about the Monica Lewinsky scandal.”
