After a high-profile announcement that it will be handing out an Oscar in a new “popular film” category, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science appears to have changed its mind. The AP reports that the academy says it’s suspending its plan to honor the new category at the 2019 Academy Awards.
The move comes after the organization received widespread backlash over the plan. The academy now says it will further study its plans to add the category.
“It wrote in a statement that it recognized that implementing a new award three quarters of the way into the year creates challenges for films that have already been released,” the AP reports.
In the statement, Dawn Hudson, CEO of the academy, says: “There has been a wide range of reactions to the introduction of a new award, and we recognize the need for further discussion with our members.”
