Actor Sean Penn, who has just made his TV debut in the new series “The First” from Hulu, made news during an interview promoting the show when he opened up with critical comments about the #MeToo movement. The interview, which was aired on NBC’s “Today” show, can be seen below.

Penn appears in the interview alongside “The First” co-star Natascha McElhone, with NBC’s Natalie Morales conducting the interview. Penn summed up much of what he thinks is missing from #MeToo in one word: “nuance.”

After the conversation turned to #MeToo, Penn said: “The spirit of much of what has been the #MeToo movement is to divide men and women.”

While Penn appeared to agree with some of what the movement represents, he criticized how it has been covered and received, saying it is seen in terms that are too black and white.

“There’s a common sense that is not represented at all in the discussion when it comes to the media discussion of it,” Penn said, adding: “I’m very suspicious of a movement that gets glommed onto in great stridency and rage, without nuance. And even when people try to discuss it in a nuanced way, the nuance itself is attacked.”
