Showtime and Sacha Baron Cohen Sued for Millions Over ‘Who Is America?’

After generating headlines for weeks by luring politicians into making fools of themselves on his show, Sacha Baron Cohen is being sued by one of those politicians. The New York Times reports that former Senate candidate Roy S. Moore of Alabama followed though on an earlier threat, suing Cohen and Showtime over his appearance on “Who Is America?”

“Mr. Moore said he was seeking more than $95 million in damages for defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress and fraud in a suit filed on Wednesday in Federal District Court in the District of Columbia,” The Times reports. “Showtime and CBS, which owns it, are named as defendants along with Mr. Cohen.”

The report notes that Moore said back in July, before his episode aired, that he had been duped into participating.

“His admission came around the same time other high-profile conservatives, including Joe Walsh, a former congressman, and Sarah Palin, the former vice-presidential nominee, publicly said the same,” The Times reports. “But even if the lawsuit’s assertions are true, legal experts say, Mr. Moore could have a difficult time winning the case.”

In the Moore segment, Cohen appeared in character as Israeli antiterrorism expert “Erran Morad.”

“In the interview, Mr. Cohen brought out a device, which appeared to be a metal detector wand, but which he claimed was an Israeli invention that could detect pedophiles. When the device signaled that Mr. Moore could be a pedophile, he became angry and ended the interview,” The Times reports.

The report adds: “A former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court and a popular if polarizing figure in the state, Mr. Moore had been accused by several women of having pursued them sexually when he was in his 30s and they were teenagers, accusations that came to light during his Senate campaign. The allegations contributed to his upset loss in the election last December to Doug Jones, who became Alabama’s first Democratic senator in a quarter century.”

  1. We need Moore Sex and Moore Pedophiles … Roy should come out of the closet so to speak and be proud of his nature … he can take the lead role in the whole movement … “Every Pedophile should go the Extra Mile for their new Fearless Leader, Mr Moore” … time to unite and be one force …

  2. In my humble opinion, Sacha Baron Cohen is part of what is wrong with this country. Taking advantage of someone in order to humiliate and degrade them is not funny to me. I have to work with the public. More than once I’ve had to deal with someone who was a total nut job. To their face, I had to be polite and take them seriously. Cohen uses these situations to be mean spirited and cruel. I was raised in the South and taught to treat everyone with kindness & respect, so I will never understand those who think bullying and cruelty is funny.

  3. Is it Sacha’s fault that these people aren’t smart enough to do a little research to find out who the interviewer is and what his actual credentials are?
